American Blimp Corp. of Hillsboro, Ore. recently received FAA certification for its A-60 Lightship, designed as an arial advertising medium. It is one of the first craft to be certified under a 1987 advisory circular to FAR Part 21 that applies specifically to blimps. The A-60 is 128 ft. long, with envelope volume of 60,000 cu. ft. It can lift up to 1,250 lb. and travel at 55 MPH. powered by two German Limback, 80-hp L2000 engines. The firm has orders for nine airships and options for 14 more, with six deliveries scheduled for 1990. The A-60 sells for $1.2 million. For night advertising, the interior of the envelope is illuminated, and the fabric comes in a variety of colors.
