Heard today while IFR Santa Barbara (SBA) -> Palo Alto (PAO), talking
to LA Center:


C172:  Center, Cessna 12345 20 south Paso Robles, requesting VFR flight
following.

ZLA:  Cessna 12345, squak 5113.

C172:  Squak 5133, Cessna 345.

ZLA:  Negative sir, that was squak 5113.

C172:  Squak 5013.

ZLA:  Negative.  Squak 5113.

C172:  Squak 5133.

ZLA:  Negative sir.  Real slowly now, squak F-I-V-E O-N-E O-N-E T-H-R-E-E

C172: OK, Squak 5013.

ZLA:  One last time sir, now listen: Squak (even more slowly and
clearly) 5113.

C172: That was Squak 5103.

ZLA:  That will do.  Squak 5103.


Ineptitude won that one!  The center controller became disfunctional
at that point.  She was laughing too hard to make calls!
